Advent 7014

Back at the time when i purchased this laptop it was one of the best available. Equipped with a powerful CPU and a high amount of RAM this laptop would seem the perfect choice for anyone who wants to perform more or less any task on the go.

I have to say the good points of this laptop are its powerful Intel Pentium 4 processors operating at 2.8GHz and the 512MB DDR RAM. These factors will allow the user to perform multiple tasks at speed as well as perform more advanced tasks such as video editing with no trouble at all. the screen is a good size and high quality making things easier to read and image quality sharp and clear. Combined with the power of the laptop and the clarity of the screen is a DVD/CDRW combo drive, this makes DVD playback crystal clear and smooth. The laptop is actually fitted with 2 main speakers and 2 high tone speakers to obtain better levels of sound whilst watching movies, playing games, listening to music, etc. The 40GB hard disk is large enough for general use.

There are a number of bad points with this system. The first being the ventalation. As the system draws cool air in from underneath the system needs to be used on a flat surface to obtain the correct air flow. The vent for extracting the heat is positioned on the top of the laptop just above the keyboard. As this has a metal grill it gets very hot when running more powerful applications. The thing i could not understand was why the vent was placed on the top as it means you cannot close the laptop lid while the system is running as it obstructs the vent. Personally i would not like to put my screen above a very hot vent. The major let down with this system though is the graphics card. Games cannot really take advantage of this laptop when faced with a Gefoce 4 MX420 32MB VGA board, although this was one of the best mobile chips around when the laptop was release, but now its a little dated. My personal experience with the laptop is it is stable, but the hardware is unreliable. In the 2 years of having the system it has been back for repair 6 times (its at repair now) and 2 of the times its come back and lasted less than a day before it has to go back again.

The Advent 7014 overall is a nice powerful machine but it has its down points. I'm going to have to give it 2 out of 10 just for the bad experience i have had with it but generally speaking it is a nice machine which plays games well and runs fast when attempting more or less any task.
