Microgynon 30 Contraceptive Pill

By: Rex Inego | May 28, 2007 03:48 PM

I'm 19. After years of really painful and irregular periods, several months in a relationship with my only form of contraception being condoms (which, apart from being rather unreliable and uncomfortable, tend to kill the mood somewhat) and a couple of pregnancy scares, I'd had enough. Went and asked my GP to put me on the pill, & was prescribed Microgynon. I've been using it for almost 3 months now.

Pros: - Well, I'm not pregnant, so I can't claim it doesn't work. - My periods are now a lot lighter, almost painless, and I know when they're going to happen, so no more stressing over 'omg, where IS it? Am I pregnant...?'. Which is lovely. - My formerly-dinky little boobs are now a C cup, which pleases my boyfriend no end... - Apart from that, I'm still a size 8, and don't seem to have put any weight on. - Don't have to use condoms anymore! - Have some sort of control over what my body is up to.

cons: A few of the side effects mentioned in the patient information pack: occasional sore breasts (but nothing major, it's on a par with mild PMT really, and it was nothing I couldn't cope with), and the odd headache, though I can't neccesarily attribute them to the Pill, as I suspect general stress is involved. I was also warned about some inital discomfort in the first few weeks. I started taking Microgynon on the first day of my period, as advised. For the next 6 or so days I was woken up at every day without fail at 5 in the morning by excruciating abdominal cramps that lasted for about 2 hours, though they became less intense each day. Bleeding was also heavier than normal and lasted for longer. I also got far more headaches. However, all of this stopped by the end of the first week. I've also found remembering to take them difficult (but this is just me being absent-minded)

conclusion: Despite some teething problems with it, my experience thus far with microgynon hasn't been too bad at all. At the end of the day, most people take this as a contraceptive, as which it's pretty effective, so if you're taking it expecting not to get pregnant, you can't really be too dissapointed. True, there are side-effects, though you're not guaranteed to experience all, or any, of them. I haven't noticed any mood swings, depression, etc, though my friends note that I'm hardly a little bundle of joy and sunshine at the best of times anyway. Lots of people have reported weight gains with this pill, but I've not noticed this personally. The information leaflet warns that your appetite may increase due to the pill, which is probably the cause of it, so consider it a question of self-control. Don't buy snack-food. Just say no to the chips. You can do it. Honest... In my own experience, in terms of pain, generally it's nothing that a couple of ibuprofen can't cure. The first few days were, admittedly, unpleasent, but in the end I'd say it was worth it; it was only temporary, and now I don't suffer period pains at all. Remembering to take them has been an issue for me, and is maybe one to consider if you're thinking of using this, though I suspect this applies to any pill. With this you can get away with taking a pill up to 12 hours late, so there's a bit of room to allow for absent-mindedness. Set yourself an alarm on your phone or something, I find this works. So on the whole, I'd say I'm happy with Microgynon; for me, the benefits far outweigh any side-effects. I'm no longer as worried getting pregnant, or having to deal with using condoms and the risk of them splitting/coming off/'getting lost', so to speak, which my boyfriend and I agree has improved our sex life enormously (incidentally, I've not noticed any lack of sex-drive). My periods have started behaving themselves for the first time ever. And I now have boobs! BOOBS! So yes, though I know that everyone has a different reaction to it, I personally would reccomend it, if just because it does pretty much what it says on the box. I can't complain about that.
